As one of the nation’s most comprehensive pediatric pain management programs, Phoenix Children’s treats a wide variety of conditions. These include acute and chronic pain in children of all ages.

Acute Pain

Acute pain usually goes away in less than three months, such as the time it takes to heal wounds or injuries. We treat acute pain related to these and other conditions: 

Chronic Pain

Some conditions are directly or indirectly associated with chronic pain. These range from autoimmune and genetic disorders to cancer, including cancer treatments or complications. Even when the cause of pain is unknown, painful symptoms are treatable.  

We treat these and other types of chronic pain:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Amplified musculoskeletal pain syndrome (AMPS)
  • Back pain
  • Bone disorders causing pain, such as osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and hypophosphatasia (HPP) 
  • Cancer pain such as inoperable tumors, nerve pain or other side effects of treatment such as surgery, radiation or chemotherapy
  • Chest wall pain, including but not limited to slipping rib syndrome  
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)  
  • Epidermolysis bullosa, erythromelalgia and other painful skin conditions  
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Joint conditions, including hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and hypermobility syndrome
