Why Us?

Emergency Medicine Department

Every one of our full-time physicians are pediatric emergency medicine-trained specialists, working together to provide innovative emergency care 24/7. Our nursing staff also has unequaled pediatric emergency experience and expertise.

Traumatic injuries are the leading cause of death among Arizona children between the ages of 1 and 16. That’s why highly specialized emergency and trauma services are critically important. Luckily, we have those services too.

Our Emergency Department (ED) and American College of Surgeons-verified Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center, (only one of a few in the nation) opened September 20, 2017. This amazing care facility is the only pediatric emergency service in a free-standing children’s hospital in Arizona.

The mortality rate at our ED and Trauma Center is one of the lowest in the country. In fact, critically injured children treated at Phoenix Children’s Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center have better outcomes, shorter lengths of stay and lower mortality rates.

    Arizona ALS Base Hospital certification

Our Emergency Department is certified by the Arizona Department of Health Services as an Advanced Life Support Base Hospital, the only children’s hospital in the state to earn this designation. As an ALS Base Hospital, Phoenix Children’s serves as a communications center that provides phone and online pediatric medical direction to certified EMTs and paramedics in the field — whether the patient’s destination is Phoenix Children’s or another hospital. By providing Phoenix Children’s pediatric emergency expertise to first responders, we can improve care even before a patient arrives at the hospital. This gives the patient the very best chance for recovery.

    State-of-the-art equipment

We're proud to offer innovative medical equipment that improves diagnoses and treatments. For example, we're the second pediatric hospital in the nation to offer an iQon CT scanner, which provides critical imaging of traumatic injuries, tumors, vascular structures and infections with a single scan, allowing for faster diagnoses and quicker development of treatment strategies.
