About Carrie M. Schaefer, MD

Carrie M. Schaefer, MD, is a pediatric radiologist with Phoenix Children's. Her areas of expertise include pediatric interventional radiology, vascular procedures, and ultrasound-guided procedures.

Dr. Schaefer thinks that Phoenix Children's is a great place to practice medicine because of the collaboration and expertise of the medical staff. She appreciates the multitude of specialties available and how they contribute to providing the best care and hope for patients and their families. Additionally, she appreciates how Phoenix Children's, as a teaching institution, provides an opportunity to continually learn and evolve through the practice of teaching fellows, residents, and medical students.

After earning her Doctor of Medicine at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, she completed a medical/surgical internship and residency in diagnostic radiology at Michigan State University. Dr. Schaefer continued her training with a fellowship in pediatric radiology at Texas Children's Hospital/ Baylor College of Medicine.

She is board-certified in pediatric radiology and diagnostic radiology. She also holds professional affiliations with the Society for Pediatric Radiology, the Society of Interventional Radiology, the Society for Pediatric Interventional Radiology and the John Caffey Society.

Dr. Schaefer has been an invited lecturer and has presented at various professional society meetings. She has also been voted as a Top Doctor in Phoenix Magazine.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Schaefer is dedicated to clinical education and research. She holds academic positions at both the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Mayo Clinic College of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Child Health Division of Radiology and an Instructor of Radiology, respectively.

Dr. Schaefer's research interests include vascular procedures and venous preservation. In 2019, she received a Leadership Circle Grant award for her development of a "venous map," which is completed and now in each child's electronic medical record at Phoenix Children's.

Over the years, Dr. Schaefer has contributed to publications in several medical journals, including Pediatric Radiology, Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, American Journal of Neuroradiology, Applied Radiology and Annals of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

In her practice, Dr. Schaefer strives to provide the best possible care - not just for patients, but also for their families.
