Joanna L. Kramer, DO, MPH, is a physician in Phoenix Children's Division of Primary, Complex Care and Adolescent Medicine.

After obtaining her undergraduate degree from Ursinus College in Pennsylvania, Dr. Kramer earned a master's degree in public health from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a Doctorate degree in Osteopathic Medicine from Touro University Nevada. She then completed a pediatric residency and a chief residency at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio. Dr. Kramer's professional interests include resident and medical student education, osteopathic education, research in the areas of public health and osteopathic medicine, and quality improvement (QI) in medicine and education.

Dr. Kramer is passionate about contributing to the body of evidence-based medicine and continuous quality improvement in her work. Her research and quality improvement interests include pediatric osteopathic manipulation, environmental health, public health and health disparities, and COVID-19 prevention and surveillance.

She serves as a sub-investigator on a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored study about reducing COVID-19 transmission in Hispanic and low-income preschoolers. She is also involved in Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine trial and a study investigating the safety and tolerability of an oral bacterial extract for the prevention of wheezing-associated lower respiratory tract infections.

Her most recent publication focuses on delivering osteopathic interventions virtually. She reported that osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) via telehealth resulted in decreased average pain scores following treatment while minimizing the risk of viral exposure and transmission. She has also spoken at local and national conferences on topics related to pediatric osteopathic manipulation.

Dr. Kramer led the Phoenix Children's residents in a quality improvement project to improve screening for discrimination in the General Pediatrics clinic. The team won the Phoenix Children's Quality Day award for the best resident QI project in 2022. Her training and expertise in QI also lead to positions including director of maintenance of certification at Phoenix Children's and graduate medical education QI coach.

Dr. Kramer is a clinical assistant professor of medicine for the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix and a clinical instructor at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine-Phoenix. With a passion for educating, she mentors medical students and residents who are interested in pediatrics, osteopathic medicine, quality improvement and research. In her first year at Phoenix Children's, she was awarded the Melvin L. Cohen outpatient faculty teacher of the year by the residents.

She developed and directs an osteopathic manipulative medicine rotation and enjoys serving as rotation director for the general pediatrics rotation at Phoenix Children's.

In her free time, Dr. Kramer loves exploring nature with her dogs Ollie and Lola, traveling, cooking and trying new foods/restaurants.
