About Luis F. Goncalves, MD
Luis F. Goncalves, MD, is a pediatric radiologist who began his medical career caring for pregnant women and delivering their babies. Inspired to pursue the field by the obstetrician, a family friend, who delivered him, Dr. Goncalves quickly became drawn to fetal medicine.
"I have always been fascinated about fetal life - how babies are conceived and develop in utero," Dr. Goncalves says. "It's exciting to help diagnose problems that we may be able to address before or right after the baby is born."
After 16 years working exclusively in fetal imaging, Dr. Goncalves realized he wanted to be involved in care beyond the womb. This realization led him to become a pediatric radiologist.
"I was missing out on knowing the actual outcomes - the stories of these fetuses beyond the womb," says Dr. Goncalves. "I feel fulfilled now that I can participate in the entire continuum of care, from fetal to postnatal life. I care for patients with respect and compassion and always try to attend to their needs promptly and professionally and to achieve a correct diagnosis."
Dr. Goncalves treasures the collaborative spirit at Phoenix Children's and is grateful to be part of an institution offering the latest advances in patient care.
A prolific researcher, Dr. Goncalves has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals, contributed over 35 chapters to fetal imaging textbooks and is co-editor of the latest edition of Fleischer's Sonography in Obstetrics & Gynecology, one of the leading textbooks in the field.
Outside of work, Dr. Goncalves enjoys spending time with his wife and sons, biking and hiking.
