About Monika M. Metzger, MD, MSc

Monika Metzger, MD, MSc, is the section chief of leukemia and lymphoma in the Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders at Phoenix Children's. Dr. Metzger is a pediatric oncologist with extensive skill and experience in treating children with leukemia and lymphoma.

After earning her medical degree from the Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule in Aachen, Germany, Dr. Metzger completed her pediatric residency training at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She trained as a fellow in pediatric hematology and oncology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Metzger also holds a master's degree in clinical epidemiology from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr. Metzger is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in general pediatrics and in pediatric hematology-oncology. She is a member of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Children's Oncology Group and the International Society of Pediatric Oncology.

In 2021, Dr. Metzger published the results of the first frontline pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma protocol that incorporated targeted therapy, she led this multi-institutional trial that ran from 2013 through 2018. A prolific researcher, she has published more than 100 peer-reviewed studies in prestigious medical journals, including The Lancet Oncology, the Journal of Clinical Oncology and Pediatric Blood & Cancer. Dr. Metzger is also a frequent presenter at national and international conferences, such as the Annual Scientific Conference of Alexandria Clinical Oncology Department and the POEM (Pediatric Oncology East & Mediterranean) Conference, as well as annual meetings of the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Oncologia Pediatrica, the International Society of Paediatric Oncology Asian (SIOP-Asia) and Consorcio Latinoamericano de Oncologia Pediatrica.

Dr. Metzger likes to spend her free time outdoors. She enjoys hiking, kayaking, salsa dancing, cooking, puzzles, reading and listening to podcasts.
