Sudha Balan, MD, is a pediatric anesthesiologist at Phoenix Children's. Dr. Balan provides a comprehensive range of anesthesia services for children who need surgery, medical procedures and pain management.

Dr. Balan is proud to work at Phoenix Children's and enjoys working at a pediatric center of excellence that continues to grow. She believes in the organization's commitment to whole-patient care and evidence-based treatment protocols.

After earning her medical degree from Madras Medical College in Chennai, India, Dr. Balan completed an anesthesia residency program at Apollo Hospitals, also in Chennai, India. She continued her medical training in the United States with residency training and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. She also completed fellowship training in cardiothoracic anesthesia at The Heart Hospital of University College London in England. Dr. Balan is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in both general anesthesia and pediatric anesthesia.

Dr. Balan was inspired to become a physician through the study of human biology, physiology and how that knowledge can help people who are ill or injured. When caring for children before and during their surgery or procedure, Dr. Balan considers not just the child's medical condition, but also the added stress they often experience while at the hospital. She believes in doing everything she can to earn the trust of a child and their caregivers, while providing information and reassurance.

In her free time, Dr. Balan enjoys spending time with her husband, two sons and the family rescue dog. Her hobbies include scuba diving, snowboarding and photography.
