About Wilson Andres Vasconez Samaniego, MD

W. Andres Vasconez Samaniego, MD, FAAP, is a pediatric blood and marrow transplant physician at Phoenix Children's Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, which is a collaboration with Mayo Clinic Arizona. He has specialized training and clinical experience in providing children, adolescents and young adults with state-of-the-art treatments, including immunotherapy, bone marrow transplants, cellular and genetic therapies for hemoglobinopathies.

Dr. Vasconez Samaniego earned his medical degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador School of Medicine in Quito, Ecuador. He trained as a research scholar in pediatrics at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Child Health Research Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, and completed his residency training in pediatrics at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. Dr. Vasconez Samaniego trained as a fellow in pediatric hematology and oncology through a combined program at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore and the National Cancer Institute at National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his postgraduate medical training in pediatric stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy at the University of Texas, Children's Cancer Hospital at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

A passionate advocate for global health initiatives, Dr. Vasconez Samaniego helps educate medical students and trainees as a clinical assistant professor at Phoenix Children's. He also holds academic appointments at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Creighton University School of Medicine, and Mayo Clinic, Alix School of Medicine in Arizona. Previously, he served as chair of the Johns Hopkins University/National Cancer Institute's Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Education Committee. In 2025, Dr. Vasconez Samaniego was selected as the American Academy of Pediatrics Representative for the Sickle Cell Disease Coalition. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and an associate member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy, the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the Latin American BMT group.

Dr. Vasconez Samaniego's research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including Pediatric Blood & Cancer,Scientific Reports and Blood, the journal for the American Society of Hematology (ASH), among others. He has also been an invited speaker at national and international meetings of the Argentine Society of Hematology, the American Society of Hematology and Yale University School of Medicine, Project ECHO, Heal Sickle session series.

Outside of work, Dr. Vasconez Samaniego enjoys spending quality time with his family, exploring the outdoors and traveling. He also enjoys reading, swimming and staying active to maintain balance and well-being.
