Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes Fellowship

Curriculum

Each year includes four weeks of vacation and one week of CME

Year 1

The emphasis during the first year of the fellowship is to gain experience in the clinical practice of pediatric endocrinology and diabetes:

  • Call is 1 in every 3 weeks (total of 16 weeks). Night coverage is every other night during call weeks.
  • Continuity clinic is held during non-call weeks (3 half-days per week)
  • Weekly protected fellows’ didactics every Thursday morning
  • Weekly fellows research meeting with research and/or QI director every Wednesday
  • Scholarly activities: fellows in the first year identify and submit a case report for publication. Fellows’ narrow areas of interest for a Quality Improvement project and an investigator-initiated research study.

Years 2 and 3

During their second and third year of training, fellows are allowed ample time to complete scholarly activities. In addition, Fellows participate in clinical care of specialized areas, including childhood cancer survivorship, type 2 diabetes, CF-related diabetes, disorders of sexual differentiation, transgender clinic, pediatric/adolescent gynecology, pituitary clinic among others.

  • Call is 1 every 6 weeks (total of 8 weeks). Night coverage is every other night during call weeks.
  • Continuity clinic is held during non-call weeks (1 full day per week)
  • Weekly protected fellows’ didactics every Thursday morning
  • Weekly fellows research meeting with research and/or QI director every Wednesday
  • Scholarly activity: Focus on design, execution, and completion of both the Quality Improvement project (by end of year two) and an investigator-initiated study with the goal to submit for publication at least one of the two projects (exception: an advanced degree would replace the investigator-initiated study) by end of year three.

Advanced Degree Options

All fellows have access to obtaining a master’s degree (of their choice) through the University of Arizona with tuition remittance as a faculty member.

Clinical Expectations

Meeting or exceeding the 6 ACGME Core Competencies, including Professionalism.

Scholarly Activity Expectations

  • Submit a case report for publication by end of first year.
  • Design, execute and complete a quality improvement project by end of year two.
  • Design, execute and complete an investigator-initiated research project with the goal of submission for publication in a peer-reviewed journal prior to fellowship graduation.

Teaching Expectations

  • Teach and guide PCH residents who rotate in Endocrine.
  • Participate in PCH resident block didactics.
  • Teach medical students both formally and informally.

Evaluation

  • The Scholarly Oversight Committee shall meet two times per year to monitor progress and provide feedback on scholarly project throughout fellowship.
  • The Clinical Competency Committee shall meet two times per year to monitor progress of clinical skill throughout fellowship.
  • Fellows meet one-on-one with Program Director two time per year to review and discuss feedback on the fellow’s clinical and academic progress.
