Curricula & Schedules

The first year of fellowship is dedicated to the fellow transitioning from General Surgery to Pediatric Surgery. In furtherance of that goal, the fellow rotates with the NICU, PICU, and Urology.

Pediatric Surgery

The fellow spends time developing, through technical training and operative experiences, full competence to execute the operative and non-operative procedures intrinsic to the practice of pediatric surgery.

NICU

The fellow spends one month rotating alongside Neonatology fellows in the NICU at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is an adult center, and its NICU is covered by pediatric surgeons from Phoenix Children’s.

Urology

The fellow spends one month rotating alongside Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellows in the PICU at Phoenix Children’s. There is no surgical team in the PICU; instead, patients are assigned to one of two teams. The fellow may spend time with either team.

PICU

The fellow spends two weeks with the Pediatric Urology service at Phoenix Children’s. The rest of the month is spent on a Pediatric Surgery rotation.

During the second year of fellowship, the fellow steps into the role of chief fellow. The chief fellow works closely with the faculty and advanced practice providers to run the surgery service and serves as the liaison between surgery and the ICUs.

Pediatric Surgery

The fellow continues to spend time developing, through technical training and operative experiences, full competence to execute the operative and non-operative procedures intrinsic to the practice of pediatric surgery.
