At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the impact of social determinants of health on perioperative outcomes in pediatric patients undergoing brain tumor surgery.
  • Understand the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) and its utility as a measure of neighborhood-level socioeconomic disadvantage in clinical research.
  • Evaluate the association between socioeconomic disadvantage and neurosurgical outcomes and recognize opportunities to address disparities in pediatric neuro-oncologic care.

Alexander Aguirre, MD, is a PGY-3 neurological surgery resident at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. He earned his medical degree from the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, graduating with research thesis honors, after completing his undergraduate education at Syracuse University, where he earned dual bachelor’s degrees in biochemistry and neuroscience, graduating summa cum laude. Dr. Aguirre has developed a strong academic foundation in neurosurgery through extensive clinical research spanning cerebrovascular, cranial, and spinal neurosurgery. He has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including large cohort studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses, and has presented his work at national and international neurosurgical conferences. Dr. Aguirre is committed to pursuing a career in academic neurosurgery, with particular interests in neurosurgical oncology for both the clinical and translational research opportunities.
