Point-of-Care Ultrasound: From the Field to the Bedside

At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Describe how point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is applied across the continuum of pediatric care, from the outpatient office and prehospital setting through the emergency department, ICU, OR, and inpatient wards.
  • Identify at least three clinical scenarios in which POCUS changes time-sensitive management decisions, using evidence from the pediatric literature and a representative case.
  • Discuss the training, credentialing, and quality assurance infrastructure required to build and sustain a hospital-wide POCUS program.

Dr. Julie Furmick is the Director of Point-of-Care Ultrasound for the Pediatric Emergency Department at Phoenix Children's, where she also serves as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine attending physician. She completed her Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center, Atrium Health, followed by a Point-of-Care Ultrasound fellowship at Valleywise Health. Dr. Furmick is board certified in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine and serves as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix. Her academic work focuses on POCUS education as well as POCUS program development for Phoenix Children's. She has presented nationally on point-of-care ultrasound, including prior invited talks on prehospital ultrasound and pediatric POCUS applications.
