SURG - Endometriosis: Considerations in Adolescents & Laparoscopic Diagnosis

At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the clinical presentation of endometriosis in adolescents, including features that differ from adult disease and factors that may contribute to delayed diagnosis.
  • Apply contemporary diagnostic principles for adolescent endometriosis, including the evolving role of clinical diagnosis, imaging, and laparoscopy.
  • Perform a systematic laparoscopic assessment for endometriosis and recognize its variable surgical phenotypes, including subtle and atypical lesions, with appropriate documentation, staging, and initial management of disease encountered at surgery.

Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Fellow, Phoenix Children’s

Dr. Noemi Hughes is a Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Fellow at Phoenix Children’s, with particular clinical interests in congenital reproductive tract anomalies, vaginal and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. She received her medical degree from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, where she also completed a degree in Embryology, Fetal and Placental Physiology, before Obstetrics and Gynecology residency training in New York. Her academic work includes research and publications in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, pelvic imaging, and minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, with a particular interest in improving the recognition and management of endometriosis.

Gynecology Fellow, Phoenix Children’s 

Dr. Ritesh Joshi, DGO, DNB, FACOG, MRCOG is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist with more than 10 years of clinical experience across India and the United Kingdom. He completed his postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology in India before joining the NHS in the UK, where he obtained Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) and subsequently worked as a Specialty Trainee in Obstetrics and Gynecology at University Hospitals of Leicester, UK.

Dr. Joshi is currently a Fellow in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology at Phoenix Children’s. His clinical interests include adolescent gynecology, endometriosis, menstrual management, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, and complex gynecologic conditions. He is actively involved in clinical research, quality improvement, and medical education, and is pursuing a Master of Public Health at the University of Arizona.
