Led By
Alex Gibbons, MD

At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  • Briefly overview the history of fetal surgery
  • Understand the work-up for the disease processes that are most commonly candidates for fetal intervention (twin-twin transfusion syndrome, myelomeningocele, congenital diaphragmatic hernia)
  • Discuss the interventions available for those disease processes and their most common complications

About this presenter:

Alex Gibbons, MD
Senior Fellow, Pediatric Surgery
Phoenix Children’s

Alexander T. Gibbons is the senior fellow in Pediatric Surgery at Phoenix Children’s. In his time here, he has run the inpatient surgical service with the aid of his excellent team, and completed a project to initiate a re-feeding protocol for select patients. Prior to his training, he obtained his Medical Doctorate and his Masters of Science in Applied Anatomy at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, OH. He completed his General Surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he also served as the administrative chief resident and obtained multiple teaching awards. He then spent a year at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for a Fetal Surgery fellowship, where he learned in detail the topic of today’s talk. After completing his Pediatric Surgery fellowship in July, he will join the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina as an assistant professor in Pediatric Surgery, where he is excited to apply the great training he received here. He is the happy husband of Erin, and the proud father of Penelope and Isaac, who have all supported him during his decade of post-graduate training.
