Dorothee Newbern, MD
Program Director
Born and raised in France, Dr. Newbern moved to the United States as a teenager to attend boarding school in Asheville, North Carolina. She then earned a B.S in biology from Duke University. Following graduation from Wake Forest University School of Medicine, she completed her Pediatric Residency and Endocrinology Fellowship training at Duke Medical Center, where she remained on faculty until joining Phoenix Children's in 2013. Since then, Dr. Newbern has been heavily engaged in medical education. She served as the Director of the Endocrinology resident rotation from 2013 until 2017, then Associate Program Director of the Phoenix Children's Hospital and Alliance Pediatric Residency Program from 2017 to 2021 and Program Director of the Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program since May 2019. Her academic interests include obesity, diabetes, and late effects in childhood cancer survivors. Her husband is an Assistant Professor in Neuroscience at Arizona State University. Outside of work, Dr. Newbern enjoys cooking, jogging, traveling, and raising her two daughters.
Melissa Chambers, DO
Associate Program Director
Dr. Chambers attended medical school at A.T Stillwell University in Mesa, AZ, and following graduation, she completed her pediatric residency at Baylor S&W McLane Children’s Hospital in Texas. She then returned to Arizona to complete her fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at Phoenix Children’s where she now remains as faculty. As of July 2024, Dr. Chambers is the Associate Program Director for the fellowship program as well as the endocrinology rotation director for all the residents and medical students who do a Pediatric Endocrinology rotation at Phoenix Children’s. Her clinical and research interests include childhood obesity, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes. Outside of work, Dr. Chambers enjoys spending time with her husband, playing indoor soccer and watching her three children’s sporting events.
Gabriel Shaibi, PhD
Research Director
Dr. Sahib’s research focuses on obesity and related health disparities among youth and families. His NIH-funded research program spans the translational spectrum including basic research to understand the mechanisms underpinning cardiometabolic disease to community-based interventions aimed at preventing type 2 diabetes in high-risk populations. He has contributed more than 120 peer-reviewed publications to the scientific literature stemming from over $20 million in extramural research funding. In addition to his work at PCH, Dr. Shaibi is a professor at Arizona State University where he directs the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. Outside of work, Dr. Shaibi enjoys camping, cooking, and working on classic cars (he owns a 1953 MGTD, 1951 Suburban, and a 1976 Jeep).
Robert Gonsalves, DO
Quality Improvement Director
Dr. Gonsalves is originally from New Jersey. He first came to Arizona to attend Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University. He then completed his pediatric residency at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and returned to the desert to complete his Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship at Phoenix Children’s where he remains as faculty. Dr. Gonsalves's clinical interests include thyroid cancer, calcium issues, and type 1 diabetes. He also serves as a Quality Improvement leader within the division. Outside of work he enjoys kayaking, seeing live music, discovering new restaurants, and time with family.
