The mission of the Phoenix Children's Hospital Pulmonology Fellowship is to train fellows to become the future generation of pediatric pulmonologists who will go on to provide extraordinary medical care for children with pulmonary diseases. The fellows will continue to advance the field of pediatric pulmonology, enhance the performance of the hospital and health care system, generate new knowledge for the field through research and innovation, and develop skills to educate other physicians and health care providers. With the combination of a vast clinical experience, along with academic and research opportunities, the program hopes to train physicians who will serve as future leaders in the field of Pediatric Pulmonology.

Program Description & Goals

The Pediatric Pulmonology Fellowship is an intensive three-year ACGME-accredited program. As program leaders, we understand the importance of training fellows to become board-certified pediatric pulmonologists with the procedural and clinical skills, knowledge, and expertise to become leaders in clinical, quality, research, and educational care of patients with pulmonary diseases. Our fellows will receive exceptional training in a clinically rich, supportive, and educational environment that stresses innovation, personal wellness, and a commitment to excellence. Our aim is to 1) provide our fellows with the educational resources, clinical experience, research experience, support, and mentorship they need to be their best within the diverse field of pulmonology. 2) facilitate our fellows in acquiring comprehensive skills in the evaluation, management, and procedural interventions related to pulmonary disorders. 3) inspire and prepare our fellows for future careers as leaders in clinical medicine, research, and academic medicine as it relates to the field of pulmonology. 4) emphasize and teach our fellows strategies for maintaining wellness and personal effectiveness, so they can go on to become role models of self-care and wellness while promoting the well-being of the patients they serve.

  • Pulmonary physician dedicated to oversight.
  • Fellows required to complete at least one research project.
  • Fellows also expected to participate and complete one quality improvement (QI) project.
  • Fellows expected to participate in medical education teaching. 

Our program additionally provides training in scholarly activities of research and academic teaching. Pulmonary fellows spend 16 months of their three-year training program focusing on this area. Each fellow is expected to complete a scholarly project, which can be a clinical or basic science research project. The fellow is expected to design and develop the study, conduct the appropriate research procedures, and present the results at a national meeting as well as write a manuscript to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication. A separate mentor in addition to a scholarly oversight committee will be available to provide guidance to the fellow throughout their scholarly endeavors. The fellow is also expected to participate in a quality improvement project within the division.

Fellows who successfully complete our fellowship program qualify for American Board of Pediatrics eligibility in Pediatric Pulmonology.
