The Diagnostic Imaging Department at Phoenix Children's offers a one-year ACGME-accredited Pediatric Radiology Fellowship with two available training pathways: a Traditional Fellowship Pathway and an innovative Distributed Workflow Fellowship Pathway. Both pathways provide comprehensive training in all areas of pediatric radiology, including CT, MRI, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, radiography, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology and neuroradiology, while offering flexibility to meet the diverse needs of today's trainees.
Our fellows receive unparalleled exposure to the breadth and depth of pediatric disease processes. We serve a large patient population within Arizona and neighboring states. We are recognized by U.S. News & World Report’s list of Best Children’s Hospitals. Phoenix Children’s is a Level 1 pediatric trauma center and home to many excellent clinical services.
Phoenix Children’s is the primary site of pediatric training for medical schools and radiology residencies in the Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area. Our fellows have ample opportunities to teach and lead conferences during their years of training.
The Imaging Department at Phoenix Children’s is dedicated to advancing the field of pediatric radiology. Fellows are given dedicated academic time each month to pursue research interests. Our fellows and faculty present their research at local, national and international meetings. We have a staff of physicists and research personnel that assist the academic work in our department. We are proud to have a strategic relationship with Philips Healthcare, which provides the hospital with cutting-edge imaging technology and a powerful research partner. Faculty hold appointments at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix, Mayo Clinic Scottsdale, Creighton University, Arizona State University and Barrow Neurological Institute.
Fellowship Pathways
Phoenix Children's Pediatric Radiology Fellowship offers two training pathways, allowing fellows to select the educational experience that best meets their professional and personal needs while receiving the same comprehensive pediatric radiology training.
The Traditional Fellowship Pathway follows the existing fellowship curriculum and structure as outlined throughout this webpage.
Fellows train on site at Phoenix Children's and participate in all clinical, educational, research and conference activities in person at Phoenix Children’s Thomas Campus, Arrowhead Campus or Avondale Campus locations.
The Distributed Workflow Fellowship Pathway provides fellows with the opportunity to complete the same comprehensive pediatric radiology fellowship curriculum while also having the flexibility to perform clinical responsibilities remotely, utilizing Phoenix Children's established remote radiology infrastructure.
Fellows in this pathway will:
- Complete an on-site orientation during the first two weeks of July (approximately 12 days).
- Return to Phoenix Children's approximately every other month for a dedicated one-week on-site educational and clinical experience focused on faculty interaction, hands-on learning and fellowship development.
- Spend a total of approximately 8-10 weeks on site in Phoenix during the fellowship year.
- Have flexibility in scheduling on-site weeks in Phoenix, with opportunities to group visits based on educational needs, personal circumstances, or as determined by the Clinical Competency Committee, who review fellows progress to the ACGME milestones.
At the start of training, fellows will be provided with a dedicated workstation during orientation to take to their home location. Clinical work, educational conferences and faculty interactions will be supported through Phoenix Children's secure remote technology platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Webex and an assigned Phoenix Children's phone extension.
Phoenix Children's has extensive experience supporting remote radiologist attendings in our division from across the United States, from New York to Seattle. Fellows with a reliable high-speed internet connection can expect efficient PACS performance and seamless integration into the department's workflow. Full AZ MD License is required.
Distributed Workflow fellows will participate in the same educational curriculum as traditional fellows, including:
- Daily clinical teaching
- Didactic conferences
- Multidisciplinary conferences
- Research and scholarly activities
- Faculty mentorship
- Fellowship evaluations and professional development opportunities
Please note that Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time. Fellows practicing remotely should anticipate a one-hour shift in their work schedule during portions of the year, depending on their location. Routine work hours are generally 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Phoenix time, with occasional evening and night responsibilities consistent with fellowship training requirements.
