Resident Longitudinal Experience (RLE)
PL2 and PL3 residents have the opportunity to spend an additional half-day per week in a clinical or research experience to further individualize their education and set them on the path for future career success:

Trails
Our Trails help residents prepare for the next stage of their careers, whether that means entering primary care, pursuing hospital medicine, or applying for fellowship. Throughout residency, Trails provide a framework for career exploration and preparation through relevant clinical experiences, mentorship, skill development and scholarship.
As residents’ interests and goals evolve, Trails can be revisited and individualized to guide career planning throughout residency.
How trails help residents:
- Explore and refine career interests throughout residency.
- Prepare for future practice or fellowship through relevant clinical experiences, mentorship, scholarship and skill development.
- Identify experiences and electives that align with individual career goals.
- Career Mentorship: General pediatric and subspecialty faculty provide individualized mentorship to help residents prepare for fellowship, job searches and their transition into practice.
Designed for residents considering careers in general pediatrics, academic primary care, community practice, complex care, or other ambulatory settings.
The Primary Care Trail emphasizes development in areas such as preventive care, behavioral and developmental health, care coordination, advocacy, and management of common and complex outpatient conditions.
Designed for residents considering pediatric hospital medicine or careers with a significant inpatient component.
The Hospitalist Trail emphasizes acute care, consultation, procedural skills, care transitions, quality improvement, and management of hospitalized children.
Designed for residents considering fellowship training or careers within a pediatric subspecialty.
The Subspecialty Trail provides guidance on relevant clinical experiences, mentorship, scholarship and other opportunities that support career development and fellowship preparation.
