Our residents train across three complementary hospital systems, all within a few miles of one another. Each site contributes something different to residency training, providing experience across tertiary and subspecialty pediatrics, safety-net and community care and newborn and neonatal medicine.
Phoenix Children’s
Phoenix Children’s Hospital - Thomas Campus is our primary training site and a freestanding pediatric hospital serving children from across Arizona and the greater Southwest. The hospital has more than 500 beds and broad representation across pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties, providing exposure to both common pediatric conditions and highly complex disease. Its specialized services include a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, Level IV NICU, ECMO and transplant programs.
Residents spend much of their training at Phoenix Children’s, with experiences spanning inpatient pediatrics, emergency medicine, critical care and inpatient and outpatient pediatric subspecialties. The breadth of faculty and fellowship programs also provides extensive opportunities for subspecialty exposure, mentorship, electives and career exploration throughout residency
Valleywise Health
Valleywise Health is a large public health system that provides care for many of the Valley’s underserved and medically vulnerable communities. Its pediatric services span inpatient, emergency and outpatient care, giving residents experience with general pediatrics as well as the social and structural factors that affect child health. Valleywise also cares for a diverse population that includes refugee and immigrant families.
Residents rotate at Valleywise in inpatient pediatrics, outpatient pediatrics, newborn nursery and pediatric emergency medicine. Valleywise also serves as a continuity clinic site, allowing residents to build longitudinal relationships with children and families while developing experience in primary care and community-based pediatrics.
St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center
St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is a large community hospital serving the Phoenix metropolitan area. It serves as the primary delivery hospital for the Phoenix Children’s neonatal-perinatal program and includes a 70-bed Level III NICU, providing significant exposure to deliveries and neonatal care.
Pediatric residents rotate at St. Joseph’s in the NICU. The hospital also serves as one of our continuity clinic sites, providing additional experience in a community setting. These experiences provide focused training in the care of newborns, premature infants and high-risk neonates while complementing the complex referral-based neonatal care residents encounter at Phoenix Children’s Level IV NICU.
