Resident wellness is supported through protected time, community-building activities, mental health resources and programs that promote physical and personal well-being.
Time for Connection & Wellness
- Wellness Block Conference: Two block conference sessions each year are dedicated to resident wellness and team-building.
- House Staff Meetings: Monthly resident-led meetings provide a forum to discuss program updates, resident concerns and opportunities for improvement.
Resident-Led Initiatives
House Staff Committees are led by residents and focused on enhancing the resident experience. Committees include:
- Social Committee: Organizes social events that bring residents together outside of work.
- Sports & Outdoors: Plans active social activities such as volleyball, softball, hikes, park days, etc.
- Community Engagement: Promotes service, advocacy, inclusion and connection with our community.
- Family & Friends Committee: Plans family-friendly activities and events.
- Wellness & Fatigue Management: Develops initiatives focused on resident wellness, recognition and fatigue mitigation.
Protected Time Off
- Holiday Schedule: Residents receive a dedicated block of time off over either Christmas or New Year’s.
- Holiday Party: Annual celebration with dinner and dancing for residents and their families or significant others.
- Resident Retreats: Dedicated retreat time includes 1.5 days for PGY-1 residents and a half-day for PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents.
- Intern Appreciation Night: Annual dinner celebrating the intern class, with coverage provided so all interns can attend. Families and significant others are welcome.
Mental Health Resources
- On-Site Counseling: Free and confidential counseling with licensed clinical psychologists is available through Phoenix Children’s Employee Assistance Program.
- Universal Check-In Program: Each resident receives protected time for a confidential appointment with an on-site psychologist to support proactive mental health care. Residents may opt out if they choose.
- Free Headspace Access: Phoenix Children’s employees receive complimentary access to Headspace for meditation and mindfulness resources.
Employee Assistance & Work-Life Resources
Phoenix Children’s employees and members of their households have 24/7 access to Employee Assistance Program resources, regardless of enrollment in health benefits. Services include:
- Mental Health Counseling: Eight face-to-face counseling sessions with a counselor in your area.
- Legal Consultation: 30-minute consultation with an attorney, either in person or by phone.
- Financial Counseling: 30-minute telephone consultation with a qualified specialist on topics such as debt counseling or retirement planning.
- Parenting & Childcare Resources: Resources and referrals for childcare providers, before- and after-school programs, camps, adoption organizations, child development, prenatal care and more.
- Senior Care Resources: Resources and referrals for home health agencies, assisted living facilities, social and recreational programs and long-distance caregiving.
- Pet Care Resources: Resources and referrals for pet sitting, obedience training, veterinarians and pet stores.
- Identity Theft Support: 60-minute consultation with a fraud resolution specialist.
Physical Wellness Resources
- 24/7 Wellness Center offering:
- Fitness equipment and movement classes
- Massage chairs and relaxation spaces
- Cooking classes
- Pet therapy

- Vitality: Health and fitness incentives, education and rewards for physical activity.
