Training Overview

  • Nursing education is appropriate for trauma population.
  • Must demonstrate education throughout the continuum of care.
  • Presentation on s.a.m.e level content is consistent throughout the continuum of care.
  • Credentialing process for high risk or low volume trauma associated skill set.

  • Registered nurses that may have contact with a trauma patient will need the core curriculum of information presented to them. This may be achieved by the way of Housewide in-services or unit based in-services.
  • Registered nurses may either complete a full day of the core curriculum or come on several days to complete all the course content.
  • Housewide in-services will always be presented in the s.a.m.e format and timeline. When you register, please follow up with an email or a phone call if you only want to attend a specific lecture/s on that day so we can plan accordingly.
  • Different areas of the hospital will have different core curriculum requirements. The course days are set up to include all the information a nurse in General Pediatrics or Radiology would require.
  • Registered nurses in the ED/PICU will have additional requirements. Please see your manager or educator for additional information.
  • Registered nurses in the OR/PACU only need to attend the first three lectures of the Housewide in-services, from 8 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

Course Descriptions and Objectives

Mechanism of Injury Course Description

This course provides the information necessary to determine the mechanism of injury and understand how this impacts the care of the trauma patient. Participants will get an overview of mechanism of injury and the injuries trauma patients endure relative to the mechanism.

Mechanism of Injury Course Objectives

At the end of this presentation the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the effect of injury on society.
  • Describe the risk for injury.
  • Understand how knowledge of the mechanism of injury assists in patient evaluation.
  • Compare blunt trauma injury patterns to penetrating trauma injuries.
  • Describe injury patterns related to various mechanisms of injury.

Initial Assessment and Management Course Description

This course provides the information necessary to assess, resuscitate and/or assist with lifesaving interventions when applicable. Participants will get an overview of the "gold standard" measure used to initially assess and manage the trauma patient and the radiographic studies involved in the process.

Initial Assessment and Management Course Objectives

At the end of this presentation the participant will be able to:

  • Understand the priority of the primary survey in the initial assessment of the trauma patient.
  • Discuss the systematic approach to identifying and treating injury in the trauma patient.
  • Differentiate between airway interventions and ability to choose the appropriate method due to a trauma patient's condition.
  • Identify warming measures during the initial assessment.
  • Describe a head to toe assessment.

Shock Course Description

This course provides the information necessary to understand the pathophysiology of shock and how it impacts the trauma patient. Participants will get an overview of the pathophysiology of shock, various types/classifications of shock and treatment modalities for the trauma patient.

Shock Course Objectives

At the end of this presentation the participant will be able to:

  • Define shock.
  • Discuss types of shock.
  • Describe the four classes of shock and associated clinical signs and symptoms.
  • Recognize clinical indicators for endpoints of resuscitation.
  • Identify shock categories and their various presentations in the trauma patient.

Abdominal Trauma Course Description

This course provides the information necessary to assess the abdomen, identify injuries and assist with procedures and lifesaving techniques throughout initial resuscitation. Participants will get an overview of abdominal injuries, radiographic studies/procedures used to diagnose injury and methods of treatment.

Abdominal Trauma Course Objectives

At the end of this presentation the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the mechanisms of injury for abdominal trauma.
  • State appropriate assessment and diagnostic studies for the patient with abdominal trauma.
  • Discuss various injuries of the abdomen.
  • Describe complications of abdominal trauma.
  • Discuss nursing care and list appropriate interventions for patients with abdominal trauma through the continuum of care.

Thoracic Trauma Course Description

This course provides the information necessary to asses the chest, identify injuries and assist with procedures and lifesaving techniques throughout resuscitation. Participants will get an overview of chest injuries, radiographic studies/procedures used to diagnose injury and methods of treatment.

Thoracic Trauma Course Objectives

At the end of this presentation the participant will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of "mechanism of injury" related to thoracic trauma.
  • Identify treatments for thoracic injuries.
  • Discuss the nursing management of patients with thoracic injuries.
  • Discuss radiographic measures to diagnose thoracic injury.
  • Develop a plan of care for the patient experiencing a thoracic injury.

Spinal Trauma Course Description

This course provides the information necessary to assess the spine, identify injuries and to initiate and/or assist with spinal immobilization and clearance when applicable. Participants will get an overview of spinal injuries, radiographic studies used to diagnose and methods of immobilization and treatment.
