At Phoenix Children’s, we believe it’s our responsibility to share our vast pediatric pharmaceutical expertise and knowledge with future pharmacists and technicians. That’s why we have partnered with The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy to help promote pediatric pharmacy education and address ongoing pediatric pharmacy workforce needs.

Pharmacy Student Experiential Education

Phoenix Children’s offers Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) to students pursuing the Doctor of Pharmacy degree from affiliated institutions. Experiential learning at Phoenix Children’s gives students a structured hands-on learning experience with a pediatric patient population early in their career.

Students have the opportunity to complete a wide variety of rotations within inpatient and outpatient settings:

  • Institutional/Hospital Pharmacy Practice
  • Community (Retail) Pharmacy

  • Hospital/Health-systems Pharmacy
  • Acute Care Pharmacy
  • Pediatric Clinical Specialty Electives
    • Hematology/Oncology/BMT
    • Solid Organ Transplant
    • Critical Care
      • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
      • Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
      • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
      • Emergency Medicine
    • Pharmacy Administration
  • Ambulatory Care Pharmacy
  • Community (Retail) Pharmacy

Pharmacy students who are interested in completing a rotation must be enrolled in a full-time ACPE-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program and in good academic standing. Requests to participate in experiential rotations must be made to the college’s Experiential Rotation Program Coordinator.

Student Shadow Experience

We also offer pharmacy students a one-day shadow experience with a pharmacist. Students can coordinate this request directly with a pharmacist or through their college’s Experiential Rotation Program Coordinator.

Pharmacy Internship Programs

We offer pharmacy internships within our outpatient and inpatient pharmacies. Our Pharmacy Internship Programs provide structured learning and work experience with the goal of exposing pharmacy students to hospital pharmacy practice with a pediatric patient population early in their career path. These internships give students practical pharmacy experience that supplements the curriculum at colleges of pharmacy.

Program benefits include:

  • Opportunity to obtain 1,500 intern hours required for pharmacist licensure through the Arizona Board of Pharmacy
  • Hands-on knowledge of pharmacy operations
  • Enhance clinical skills through exposure to pediatric pharmacotherapy, patient counseling and medication management
  • Engagement in projects and pharmacy clinical program and services

Pharmacy Residency Programs

Our pharmacy residency programs offer a wide variety of experiences and the chance to work closely with an outstanding team of hospital pharmacists, decentralized pharmacists, certified pharmacy technicians, student pharmacists and a range of clinical specialists. We are proud to have preceptors with a wide range of experience – many of whom are residency trained.
