Phoenix Children’s Hospital was announced the winner of the Best Use Of Innovative Mobile Technology category in the 2018 Mobie Awards, an inaugural awards event presented by Enterprise Mobility Exchange. The Hospital is recognized for deploying customizable iPad devices in patient rooms.
As outlined in its Mobie Awards case study, Phoenix Children’s goal was to use iPad devices to improve patient engagement. The Hospital also wanted a platform that allows patients and their families to view medical records, educational videos related to their care and treatment, and preferred content, by using familiar devices in hospital rooms.
The goal of the project was to develop a “zero touch solution” that provides each patient an in-room iPad personalized for his or her language, age group and family preferences. The iPads are currently in 400 of the Hospital’s patient rooms, and are automatically managed so when a patient is admitted or discharged, the in-room iPad routinely wipes clean and resets for the next incoming patient. The devices make only age-appropriate, guardian-approved content available.
“Anything a hospital can do to keep patients entertained and positively engaged can have a real impact on their well-being and their recovery,” said David Higginson, Chief Information Officer, Phoenix Children’s. “Our in-room iPads allow children to access social media, games, videos and music for personal entertainment, as if the tablet were their very own.”
Phoenix Children’s was able to build this patient engagement solution using VMware AirWatch extended with GroundControl to automatically manage the devices. The Hospital patented the solution in 2018.
“The integration between AirWatch and GroundControl enabled us to be successful,” says Higginson. “We looked at competitors, and we couldn’t find any other technology combination that provided such an elegant solution for patient entertainment and engagement. It was also very affordable, saving us 90 percent compared with other patient engagement solution many hospitals are using.”
Phoenix Children’s was presented with a prestigious crystal award at the Enterprise Mobility Transformation Exchange in Carlsbad, California, as part of a presentation.
The Mobie Awards are Enterprise Mobility Exchange’s recognition of three notable enterprises and the outstanding technological achievements they have made on their journey to digital transformation.
Between April and June 2018, companies with at least 50 employees were invited to submit nominations for the Mobie Awards. The nomination must have included a written use case detailing the company’s challenge, technology implementation, and realized ROI.
