In an ongoing effort to expand and elevate health care for children and families, Phoenix Children’s tapped two senior nursing leaders to serve in executive positions for the growing pediatric health system. Rhonda Thompson, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, is chief nursing officer (CNO) and senior vice president of patient care services, and Katie Penson, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, now serves as vice president of critical care services at Phoenix Children’s.

Before they can even start kindergarten, too many of our children are drowning - among Arizona children one to four years old, drowning deaths are happening at double the national rate. And, these deaths are most likely to happen between now and Labor Day weekend. Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Mesa Pediatrics Professional Association (“Mesa Pediatrics”) are thrilled to announce Mesa Pediatrics and its four locations across the Phoenix East Valley joined Phoenix Children’s Pediatrics. The collaboration brings together providers from two of Arizona’s original pediatric institutions. Mesa Pediatrics was the first pediatric practice established in the East Valley with a board certified pediatrician, and Phoenix Children’s is the first and only standalone children’s hospital in Arizona.

For the second time in a row, Phoenix Children’s annual cereal drive for St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance yielded more than 1 million servings of food for Arizona’s vulnerable children. Two of the largest non-profit organizations in the state, Phoenix Children’s and St. Mary’s provide meals to children through the summer. For the seventh year, Phoenix Children’s cereal drive is the largest donation event of the year for St. Mary’s and stocks the shelves during the season when children lose access to school-provided meals. Hospital staff gathered at St. Mary’s Food Bank Warehouse on Monday morning to celebrate as the organization delivered its contribution to fighting childhood hunger.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) and Phoenix Children’s Hospital announced the two organizations reached agreement on a new three-year contract. Under this new Contract, Phoenix Children’s Hospital will continue to be an in-network provider for BCBSAZ members and those families insured under plans that utilize the BCBSAZ network.
