Phoenix Children’s hosted its first Heart & Hand Clinical Excellence Awards on Thursday, October 21 at the Phoenix Country Club. The Heart and Hand Clinical Excellence Awards honor Phoenix Children’s physicians and advanced practice providers who have made exceptional contributions to pediatric medicine. Keynote speaker, former NHL player and current chief hockey development officer for the Arizona Coyotes, Shane Doan, addressed attendees during this event that focused on celebrating excellence in the areas of clinical care, research and medical education. The event host and emcee was Phoenix Children’s Physician-in-Chief Dr. Jared Muenzer, with additional speakers President & CEO Robert L. Meyer and Surgeon-in-Chief Dr. Daniel Ostlie.

For the fifth time, Phoenix Children’s Hospital has earned national rankings from U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” in 10 out of 10 ranked specialties. The health system is the only children’s hospital in Arizona ever to have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report and one of only 22 children’s hospitals that received 10 out of 10 shields in the United States to rank in every surveyed specialty for 2021-2022.

Kathleen van Leeuwen, MD, will serve as associate surgeon-in-chief of Phoenix Children’s Hospital – East Valley, slated to open in 2023. Dr. van Leeuwen is recognized in her field as an outstanding physician and surgeon and, as a longtime resident and active community member in the East Valley, she has worked and lived alongside the families Phoenix Children’s serves.

Research conducted at the Phoenix Children’s Research Institute at the University of Arizona College of Medicine — Phoenix shows normalizing cancer tumor vessels and alleviating low oxygen levels in the tumor microenvironment can improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatment in lung cancer, according to a paper published in EMBO Molecular Medicine.
