The Developmental Care Program at Phoenix Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is dedicated to optimizing the developmental journey of every infant through individualized, family-centered care. Our team of developmental specialists and therapists works collaboratively with families and the medical care team to support each infant's growth, neurodevelopment, and overall well-being from the earliest stages of life.

We provide neuroprotective care designed to minimize stress and promote healthy brain development, particularly for premature and medically complex infants. Through practices such as four-handed care and other supportive interventions, we help reduce potentially stressful experiences while creating a nurturing environment tailored to each infant's corrected gestational age.

Our developmental specialists are trained in the Neonatal Individualized Developmental Assessment and Care Program (NIDCAP), an evidence-based approach that recognizes each infant's unique strengths and challenges. By carefully observing infant behavior and developmental cues, specialists create individualized goals and recommendations that can be incorporated into daily care routines, helping infants thrive throughout their NICU stay.

In addition, the program offers a weekly developmental play group led by infant developmental specialists and a multidisciplinary therapy team. These sessions support early sensory, social, and emotional development through age-appropriate activities and interactions. The play groups also foster meaningful family engagement, encourage infant socialization, and strengthen the connections that are essential to both infant and family well-being.

Together, our developmental care services help create a supportive environment that promotes healthy development, strengthens family involvement, and prepares infants and families for success beyond the NICU.
