Dialysis Program
Phoenix Children’s offers comprehensive dialysis services, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy. Your child’s care team will talk to you about which one your child needs and what is involved.
In addition, our team offers school programs, social work services, and nutrition education. We are committed to helping children thrive while they are receiving dialysis!
Hemodialysis
In hemodialysis, the blood is cleaned outside of the body with the help of a machine (artificial kidney).
Hemodialysis usually takes place in the outpatient Dialysis Unit, but sometimes it can take place in the hospital. Most children who need hemodialysis come to our Dialysis Unit for treatments several days a week. Each session lasts three to four hours. During dialysis, children will rest in a chair. We provide various activities and games to keep them occupied during their appointment. Our dedicated child life specialist is also on hand to help keep children comfortable and entertained.
Peritoneal Dialysis
In peritoneal dialysis, the blood is cleaned while inside the body. Peritoneal dialysis happens at home rather than in the clinic or hospital setting. Our team provides families with the support and training they need to provide dialysis safely and with as little stress as possible.
Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT)
Continuous renal replacement therapy is for children with acute kidney failure who are in the intensive care unit (ICU). It provides dialysis continuously (24/7) for as long as the child needs.
