Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a procedure that uses a pump to circulate blood through an artificial lung and back into the bloodstream for patients with breathing and heart problems. The treatment provides bypass support so a patient’s lungs and heart can rest and heal.

The ECMO team caring for each patient is specially trained to handle all aspects of their care. Our team of specialists is made up of an intensivist, surgeon, ECMO primer, which is a registered nurse, respiratory therapist, or perfusionist who specializes in the management and operation of the ECMO machine, as well as ICU nurses who are all focused on providing excellent patient care.

Our program was the first pediatric and neonatal ECMO program in Arizona and involves recognized ECMO experts from across the state.
