The Cardiac High Acuity Monitoring Program for Infants and Newborns (CHAMPION) Program at Phoenix Children’s supports patients with certain types of high-risk complex congenital heart disease and single ventricle physiology, or one chamber in the heart.

The period between the first and second surgery is called the interstage. It’s a time when the risk of complications is higher. Interstage monitoring programs, like the CHAMPION Program, are designed to improve the outcomes for children who are born with one chamber in the heart.

Your Care Team Partners

Our program creates a partnership between you and your child’s care team by providing support through daily home monitoring and frequent contact with the specialists your child needs, including:

  • Dietitians
  • Doctors
  • Single ventricle nurse coordinators
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Social workers
  • Therapists – speech, occupational and physical

Before you take your child home, our team will teach you how to safely give your newborn infant the care they need. A member of the CHAMPION team is also available for families 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Collaboration

The CHAMPION Program is part of the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative (NPC-QIC). Being part of this group allows us to share information and resources with other hospitals. This enables us to provide the highest level of care for children with single ventricles, and their families.
