Neuroimmune conditions can occur when the immune system attacks the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves or even muscles. We don’t always know the specific cause, but often, there are multiple factors. In certain cases, something as simple as the common cold can be enough to set off one of these attacks. In other cases, the trigger is not as obvious.

Our specialists help monitor and treat a wide range of neuroimmune conditions, including, but not limited to:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Acute flaccid myelitis
  • Autoimmune encephalitis
  • Post-viral encephalitis
  • Down syndrome regression disorder (DSRD): A rare condition that most often occurs in teens and young adults with Down syndrome who suddenly lose developed skills.
  • Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disorder (MOGAD): A disorder that causes the immune system to attack myelin, the covering that protects the nerves. MOGAD symptoms can include loss of vision, confusion and muscle weakness.
  • Neuromyelitis optica (NMO): A rare disorder in which the immune system attacks the optic nerves and spinal cord, resulting in vision loss and other neurological symptoms.
  • Neurosarcoidosis: A type of sarcoidosis that causes inflammation in the nervous system.
  • Opsoclonus-myoclonus-ataxia syndrome (often referred to as OMAS or opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome): An autoimmune disorder that can lead to involuntary movements of the muscles and eyes, sleep issues, trouble talking and other abnormal behaviors.
  • Optic neuritis
  • Transverse myelitis

There are some neuroimmunology diseases that we treat with support from our neuromuscular experts or epilepsy experts.
