Nutritional Rehabilitation Clinic
Inpatient Services
Our Nutritional Rehab team has the training and knowledge to treat your child at any age – whether they come to us for care directly after birth or later in life. We are dedicated to ensuring each child gets the hydration and nutrients required for their survival and optimal growth and development. We work with patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and a designated pediatric gastroenterology inpatient service, which makes our program unlike any other in Arizona.
Our Trauma program and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit have earned the highest care designations possible – that means no matter how sick your child is, we offer the care they need . Our neonatologists and registered neonatal dietitians combine compassion, expertise, state-of-the-art equipment and advanced technology to care for the sickest babies.
Outpatient Services
Members of the Nutritional Rehab Clinic also provide services to patients who aren’t staying in the hospital. Our outpatient program includes frequent visits, from weekly to periodically as needed. During these visits, you’ll see a gastroenterologist and a dietitian. You’ll also see other team members such as case managers, medical assistants and highly qualified nurses. We work with home care agencies to assist with TPNs, formulas, supplies and extra needs your family may have.
Coordinated Care to Treat the Whole Child
To ensure your child receives the full attention and care they need, our Nutritional Rehab Clinic coordinates care among other Phoenix Children’s programs, including:
- NEST Clinic: Our Newborn Early Screening Team (NEST) specializes in follow-up care for children discharged from the NICU. With a focus on measuring progress and developmental milestones, this team coordinates referrals for outpatient therapies and subspecialty follow-up visits. Families who have infants with premature, at-risk or medically complex conditions benefit greatly from the NEST Clinic.
- Enteral Care: Our team offers nutritional support with the full range of feeding tubes and devices, such as nasogastric (NG), gastric (G), gastrojejunostomy (GJ) or nasojejunal (NJ) feeds.
- Intestinal Failure/Short Bowel Syndrome Clinic: Providing wholesome TPN care, this multidisciplinary clinic includes a pediatric gastroenterologist with a nutrition focus, registered dietitian, registered nurse, psychologist, pharmacist and pediatric GI surgeon. For many families, this visit includes a discussion of surgical approaches or teduglutide. This prescription medication can improve the intestinal absorption capacity in patients 1 year and older.
- Pediatric Surgery: Includes the STEP procedure, intestinal resections, as well as surgical placement of G-tubes, GJ and central lines. If your child needs an intestinal transplant, we coordinate that surgery with a trusted partner at a high-quality transplant program to ensure a smooth process for your family. We’ll care for your child leading up to the surgery and provide follow-up care as needed after the surgery.
As your child grows, their needs will change. Our pediatric gastroenterology specialists look forward to partnering with you to care for your child for many years. Then, when they enter early adulthood, we’ll transition their care to a gastroenterologist who provides high-quality adult care.
