Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology
Phoenix Children’s team is here to make patients feel comfortable, confident and relaxed at their appointments. Staff will answer your questions, walk you through what to expect and treat you with respect every time.
Parents often wonder what visits with babies or young children will include, but it’s just like any other doctor’s office. Your care team will spend time getting to know you and your child, where they will learn about your child’s symptoms and discuss a treatment plan. Exams will vary based on your child’s age and condition, but you can have peace of mind that staff will walk you – and your child – through every step.
Preparing Teens for Their First Visit to the Gynecologist
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that patients have their first gynecologic visit between the age of 13 and 15 years old. That may initially sound young to some parents, but it’s important to establish a trusted relationship between teens and their obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN).
Your first visit may just be a conversation, where you can share your health goals and questions. This appointment also gives you the appointment to learn important advice from a physician who specializes in gynecological health. That may include discussing menstrual periods, sexual health, puberty and more.
Based on your age, medical and family history, and gynecological needs, you may also have a physical exam. These exams give your gynecologist the ability to adequately assess your health and identify any possible health concerns.

Why Teens Should Visit the Gynecologist
Some teens think that if they’re not sexually active, they don’t need to see a gynecologist. That’s not always the case. An adolescent and young adult gynecologist can share helpful information as teens try to navigate the challenges and changes that mark these years.
The ACOG suggests 21 reasons to visit the gynecologist, ranging from:
- Stay in good health.
- Understand your period.
- Feel confident in your sexuality and relationships.
- Prevent sexually transmitted disease.
