The pediatric pulmonology team at Phoenix Children's treats children with all conditions affecting the lungs.
- Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis: This condition is caused by a severe allergic reaction to a common fungus called aspergillus.
- Apnea/apnea of prematurity
- Asthma
- Bronchiectasis: This chronic lung disease causes the airways to widen and develop scars.
- Bronchopulmonary dysplasia
- Coccidiomycosis (Valley Fever): This condition is an infection caused by fungus released from the soil. Arizona is one of the leading areas in the nation for this infection.
- Congenital alveolar hypoventilation syndrome: This disorder affects normal breathing. People with this condition take shallow breaths, especially during sleep.
- Congenital lobar emphysema: This rare disorder prevents air from escaping the lungs, causing the lobes of the lungs to overinflate.
- Congenital malformations of the lung and chest: These malformations develop when a baby is in the womb. They can include cysts, growths and blockages.
- Cystic fibrosis
- Diaphragmatic hernia
- Primary ciliary dyskinesia: Sometimes known as immotile ciliary syndrome, this condition prevents mucus from clearing out of the lungs and sinuses.
- Interstitial lung disease: This is an umbrella term for a group of conditions that cause scarring of the lungs.
- Lung transplantation
- Pneumonia
- Primary pulmonary hypertension
- Pulmonary hemosiderosis: This rare condition leads to repeated episodes of bleeding into the lungs, which can cause anemia and lung disease.
- Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
- Restrictive chest wall disorders: These conditions can restrict the lungs and cause rapid, shallow breathing.
- Sleep-disordered breathing: This is a general term for breathing conditions that occur during sleep. Examples include snoring and sleep apnea (when breathing stops and starts repeatedly during sleep).
- Tuberculosis
- Ventilatory muscle weakness: This condition is a common complication of neuromuscular diseases such as muscular dystrophy. It causes weakness in the muscles that help control breathing.
