Solid Tumor Program
A solid tumor is a mass of suspicious nature, which can be found anywhere on or in the body. These tumors have unknown potential for abnormal growth and spreading, which can often occur unexpectedly.
The first step to healing a patient with a solid tumor is making an accurate diagnosis. We’ll complete a full medical history and physical examination of each patient, as well as perform thorough tests that include:
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- X-ray
- Computed tomography (CT or CAT) scan
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
- Ultrasound (also called sonography)
- Biopsy
Certain tumors need a multi-faceted approach to treatment. Some patients require a single operation while others need long-term medications, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or several operations for the best chance at a cure.
Our team focuses on a collaborative and comprehensive approach to healing the whole patient. We help families learn how to cope with a solid tumor diagnosis and treatment, and make sure they feel comfortable about what to expect as they move forward.
As the largest pediatric cancer program in Arizona and a leading participant in research, Phoenix Children’s is dedicated to more than just world-class care — we’re here to find cures for childhood cancer.
