If your baby arrives earlier or smaller than expected, it’s natural to have a lot on your mind and heart. You may be facing new decisions and navigating fears that feel too big to put into words. The Tiny Baby Program at Phoenix Children’s helps you carry the load with compassionate, steady support.

We care for the smallest and most fragile newborns – those born before 28 weeks or weighing less than 1000 grams (around two pounds). These babies often need more than standard neonatal intensive care. Our team has advanced training to meet their complex needs at every stage. We’ll work with you to create a personalized plan for delivery, treatment, discharge and beyond.

Our program has some of the best survival rates for preemies born at 23 weeks or earlier. More than anything, we’re committed to giving your baby the strongest possible start in life. That means doing everything we can to reduce risks, avoid complications and send you home when the time is right.

A Multidisciplinary Team on Your Side

You’ll have a close-knit, highly trained team that includes neonatologists, nurses and a wide range of pediatric specialists. Many providers participate in regular rounds, where you can meet and ask questions. Everyone follows the same structured guidelines and workflows, so your baby’s care is coordinated and consistent. If other concerns arise, we’ll connect you to the right experts at Phoenix Children’s.

Our team includes:

  • Cardiologists
  • Craniofacial specialists
  • Developmental specialists
  • Dietitians
  • Endocrinologists
  • Ophthalmologists
  • Pharmacists
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapists
  • Pulmonologists
  • Respiratory therapists

We’re here for you, too. From the start, our social workers meet with you to offer emotional support, help with practical needs and connect you to helpful resources. If you’re facing a difficult or uncertain path, our perinatal palliative care and bereavement support teams will walk beside you. You never have to face the journey alone.

Conditions We Treat

Our team understands the unique health challenges premature babies may face. We provide the advanced treatment they need for a variety of conditions, including:

Through our Center for BPD Excellence, pulmonologists and other specialists meet monthly to coordinate care.

We achieve excellent outcomes for IVH, based on national data benchmarks.

Like IVH, our program consistently delivers strong outcomes for NEC.

Our ophthalmology team performs specialized eye exams for timely screening and management of ROP.

What Makes Us Different

When your baby is born early, every minute, move and detail matters. Here’s how we make a difference:

We Plan Before Your Baby is Born

Through our fetal care network, we meet with and support families, even before delivery. These early connections can happen over video call or at one of our staffed delivery centers throughout the Valley. We team up with you, your obstetrician (OB) and other providers to prepare for your baby’s arrival.

Seamless Delivery and Care

Many babies we see are born at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, one of our partner locations. St. Joseph’s has one of the most advanced delivery centers in the region, with bedside surgery capabilities and full specialty support. In many cases, we can stabilize and care for your child right there. If they need a higher level of support, we can safely transfer them to our level IV NICU.

A Team That Knows Your Baby

Whether your baby stays at St. Joseph’s or moves to the Phoenix Children’s NICU, you’ll see the same doctors and nurses throughout. That means familiar faces, consistent care and a smoother experience. We’ll take the time to learn your baby’s needs and get to know your family deeply over time.

Proven, Detailed Protocols

Our team follows established checklists and evidence-based care, especially in the first critical hours of life. We focus on breathing, temperature, nutrition, infection prevention and brain development – and we measure our outcomes to constantly improve.

Dedicated Nutrition Team

Feeding and growing are huge milestones for premature babies. Our nutrition and lactation team stays involved from birth through discharge to help your child meet growth goals.

Nonstop Support After the NICU

After your baby leaves the NICU, care doesn’t stop. We refer every baby to our Newborn Early Screening Team (NEST) Clinic, where we make follow-up visits as easy as possible. At each appointment, you’ll see a neonatologist, therapists and other specialists – all in one place, at one time. We also offer special NEST visits that include extra support from our nutrition and rehabilitation teams. This way, your baby gets the well-rounded care they need to keep growing strong.

Innovative Research

From studying ways to detect early lung disease to creating new tools for tracking development, we stay engaged in leading research to shape the future of tiny baby care.

Benchmarking and Quality Improvement

We’re part of national groups like the Children’s Hospitals Neonatal Consortium (CHNC) and Vermont Oxford Network, which track outcomes and share data so we can keep improving.
