Trauma

The Level I Pediatric Trauma Center designation at Thomas Campus means you can trust the care your child will get at our Center for Trauma Care. It’s the highest level of care available anywhere. The right care, right away, with the right equipment – all designed for kids big and small.

Our program covers the broad range of children’s medical needs from the minute they arrive until after discharge:

  • Concussion treatment and prevention programs
  • Medical transport from other locations
  • Orthopedic trauma program
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapy
  • Surgical programs to cover the full range of medical specialties

We understand how traumatic injuries affect patients as well as their family members. Our support services bring healing and hope at a time when you need it most.

Healing From Trauma

Helping patients and their loved ones heal after a traumatic injury is our priority. Phoenix Children’s offers many support programs and services, such as:

  • Animal-assisted therapy
  • Assistance from a social worker
  • Child Life and Therapeutic Arts Program
  • Child Life Zone, a play area where kids can be kids
  • Help keeping up with schoolwork
  • Nearby lodging for parents as your child heals
  • Relaxation, wellness and spiritual resources
  • Transportation in and around the hospital

Preventable Injuries

Traumatic injuries are the leading cause of death for children over one year old. Each year, more than 800 children in Arizona under the age of 18 are killed by preventable injuries.

As a leading trauma center, we prioritize preventing injuries. The Phoenix Children’s Injury Prevention Program addresses the most common causes of childhood injury. Our programs reach parents and children with important safety messages and skills, including these and many others:

  • Bike safety
  • Car seat safety
  • Gun safety
  • Home safety
  • Mental health resources
  • Road and pedestrian safety
  • Safe sleep
  • Sports-related injury prevention
  • Suicide prevention
  • Water safety

For Emergency Personnel and Referring Providers

Our program is dedicated to family-centered, pediatric care. As a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center at Thomas Campus, we offer the highest level of pediatric care available anywhere. We earned this highest designation level by having the capability and readiness to handle all levels of trauma cases. We ensure patients receive appropriate, high-quality care based on the severity of their injuries.

Some traumatic events affect more than one member of a family, and each has unique medical needs. Teenagers, for example, still have unique pediatric needs and are best cared for at a pediatric hospital. If a pediatric patient at Phoenix Children’s has family members being treated at an adult facility, we have Child Life specialists dedicated to keeping the children and parents in close contact.

Education and Outreach

Sharing our vast knowledge of pediatric trauma care is part of our mission. We want medical personnel to understand there are key differences between treating adults and treating children. We offer training courses to staff at other hospitals, emergency medical services and community programs that work with kids.
