Phoenix Children's offers specialized cardiac screening for student athletes who need additional evaluation before sports participation. This focused assessment helps determine whether it is safe for an athlete to return to play when a routine sports physical, symptoms, family history or EKG findings raise concerns.
Whether you're a parent seeking more information, a healthcare provider making a referral or an athletic trainer supporting an athlete, this page explains when specialized cardiac screening may be appropriate, what families can expect during the evaluation and how to connect with Phoenix Children's Sports Cardiology team.
When is this screening needed?
Most children are cleared for sports through a routine physical. Additional cardiac evaluation may be appropriate when symptoms, history, or screening findings suggest the need for a more specialized review. Families may hear this recommendation from their child’s provider, and clinicians can use this program when cardiac clearance is needed beyond the standard sports exam.
- Abnormal findings on a sports physical
- Concerning symptoms (chest pain, fainting, palpitations)
- Family history of heart conditions
- EKG abnormalities
A referral from your child’s primary care provider or another referring clinician is required when this specialized evaluation is recommended.
What should families expect during the visit?
During your visit, your child will receive:
- Electrocardiogram (EKG) to evaluate heart rhythm
- Exam with a pediatric cardiology provider
- Review of medical and family history
This focused evaluation helps determine whether sports participation is appropriate and whether any additional cardiac workup is needed to support a safe return to play.
Will additional testing be needed?
In some cases, the cardiology provider may recommend additional testing, such as an Echocardiogram (Echo). If needed, this will be scheduled for a separate visit, as imaging is not available during the initial screening.
Who is this program for?
- Middle and high school athletes (most common)
- Younger athletes when referred by a provider
This program is designed specifically for cardiac clearance, not routine sports physicals.
Is a referral needed?
A referral from your child’s healthcare provider is required.
Once Phoenix Children’s receives the referral, our scheduling team will contact the family, or families may call 602-933-3366 to book the appointment after the referral has been submitted.
