The prestigious recognition awarded by the ANDRUS Sanctuary Institute affirms the health system’s unwavering commitment to patients, families and staff facing the effects of trauma on health and behavior.

"This certification underscores our commitment to delivering exceptional, compassionate care to our patients and families,” said Rhonda Thompson, DNP, MBA, RN, NEA-BC, senior vice president of patient care services and chief nursing executive. “By embedding the principles of the Sanctuary Model into our daily practices, we are creating an environment that promotes healing, resiliency and recovery for all who walk through our doors."

The Sanctuary® Model is an evidence-based framework designed to create trauma-informed organizations by emphasizing safety, emotional intelligence and shared decision-making. Sanctuary Institute faculty conducted the rigorous, peer-reviewed certification process, which included interviews, program observations and a thorough review of health system practices.

Advancing Trauma-Informed Care for Children The designation highlights the leadership of Phoenix Children’s Inpatient Pediatric Psychiatry Unit, which adopted the Sanctuary Model. With a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, behavioral health therapists, social workers, nurses and educators, the unit integrated the model through a comprehensive range of services, including group and individual therapy, medication management and parent education.

"Achieving this certification has been a true labor of love for the entire inpatient psychiatry team," Thompson said. "The sense of pride in seeing our hard work come to fruition is immeasurable. It’s a powerful reminder of the difference we make for the children and families we serve."
