As Arizonans continue to abide by COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, drowning risk for Arizona’s children is expected to rise. Toddlers in Arizona are already drowning at double the national rate. Economic hardship is also increasing caregiver stress, childcare options are severely limited, and families are confined to apartments and single-family homes, where drowning risk is highest.

To combat this challenge and promote safety for Arizona’s families, Phoenix Children’s and Arizona State University are collaborating to provide families with resources aimed to prevent drownings. The partnership will include:

  • A special “Safe at Home” water safety virtual webinar for caregivers on Monday, May 18, 2020 at 4 pm.  Register here.
  • Water safety PSA for caregivers
  • Water safety videos for caregivers can be found here and here
  • Infographics for caregivers, with concise content for members of the media
  • “Playing it Safe” virtual workshops for community partners, with free life jackets and  door alarms
  • Water safety supplies for community partners
  • Water safety resources for primary care providers

Every resource offered was developed specifically for high-risk groups and is free, compliant with all social-distancing mandates, and accessible for families at all income levels.

The safety video, supplies, and infographics are available in both English and Spanish. To request workshops, supplies, infographics and provider resources, call 602-933-1712
