About Richard S. Engel, MD

Richard Engel, MD, FAAP, is associate division chief of pediatric hospital medicine at Phoenix Children's. In addition to his clinical role as a hospital medicine specialist, Dr. Engel serves as medical director of Quality Improvement at Phoenix Children's and chairs the Clinical Effectiveness Committee.

Dr. Engel graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia before earning his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine in New York City. He completed his internship and residency training in pediatrics at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles in Los Angeles.

Board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in pediatrics and pediatric hospital medicine, Dr. Engel is also a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is active in training the next generation of physicians and holds academic appointments at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, Creighton University School of Medicine and the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Dr. Engel also serves as the continuing medical education director of the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and leads the planning of the annual Pediatrics in the Red Rocks Conference.

Dr. Engel's clinical research has been published in the peer-reviewed publication Hospital Pediatrics, a publication of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In addition, he has presented numerous abstracts at the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Conference and Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting, among others.

Dr. Engel enjoys traveling and hiking with his wife and children, in addition to listening to classical music and playing the piano.
