At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Describe consciousness as it has been historically delineated within the domains of philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience.
- Describe emerging methods of investigating consciousness in patients with suspicion for cognitive motor dissociation.
- Discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in integrating different disciplines toward our knowledge gaps in the study of consciousness.

Brian Appavu, MD is an assistant professor of neurology and child health at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, and an ICU neurologist and epileptologist at Phoenix Children's Hospital. He is one of an extremely select group of neurologists in the country who are board certified in child neurology, epilepsy and neurosonology. Dr. Appavu champions the utilization of advanced physiologic techniques such as continuous electroencephalography and transcranial doppler ultrasound to provide advanced physiologic multimodal neuromonitoring and deliver the best neurologic care for critically ill children.
Dr. Appavu is also passionate about pediatric neurocritical care education, providing monthly educational lectures to residents and fellows and running an advanced nursing neurocritical care course. Dr. Appavu was voted by the Barrow Neurological Institute residents as the 2018 Child Neurology Teacher of the Year.
Dr. Appavu grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, IL and received his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He received his medical degree at Medical College of Wisconsin and did his child neurology residency at the Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children's. He completed a clinical neurophysiology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center in New York.
