The objective of our Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship training program is to cultivate pediatric nephrologists who excel in the specialized domain of nephrology, offering comprehensive services that address both general and specialized aspects of nephrological care for children and adolescents. Our three-year fellowship program delivers extensive inpatient and outpatient clinical training in pediatric and adult nephrological disorders, such as acute and chronic kidney disease, hypertension, nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis, and kidney transplantation.

Managing kidney disease can be complex, necessitating ongoing medical care that might span months or even years. Recognizing the importance of providing continuous care for children with kidney disease, our program and the Phoenix Children's Nephrology Department often begin care with prenatal diagnosis and continue through adolescence.

The Nephrology division is an active inpatient care, providing inpatient service across 484 inpatient beds, including 153 intensive care beds (PICU, CVICU, NICU). Phoenix Children’s is currently the largest pediatric nephrology program in the Southwest with Arizona’s only dedicated Pediatric in-center dialysis unit. We have multi-disciplinary clinics across the hospital including: Fontan Nephrology/Cardiology Clinic, Stone Nephrology/Urology Clinic, Lupus/Vasculitis Clinic, and Spina Bifida Clinic. Our pediatric nephrologists are committed to fostering long-term relationships with patients and their families, resulting in individualized and comprehensive care. Fellows will gain insight into the distinct aspects of treating pediatric nephrology patients, including psychosocial factors such as school performance and family dynamics.

The Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship at Phoenix Children's integrates clinical research, quality improvement, and patient safety training, empowering fellows to develop the skills required to advance the field of pediatric nephrology through groundbreaking research. Our program is designed to offer fellows experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings, exposing them to a varied patient population with complex medical conditions and emphasizing the development of skills necessary for patient-centered care.

The Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship presents an exceptional educational opportunity for physicians pursuing a specialization in pediatric nephrology. Graduates of our program will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to deliver high-quality care to children with kidney diseases and contribute to the field's ongoing advancement. contribute to the advancement of the field of pediatric nephrology through innovative research.

Program Description and Goals

The Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship is a concentrated three-year ACGME-accredited program at Phoenix Children's. As program leaders, we recognize the significance of training fellows to become board-certified pediatric nephrologists equipped with the procedural and clinical skills, knowledge, and expertise necessary to emerge as leaders in clinical care, research and education of patients with nephrological conditions. Our fellows will benefit from exceptional training in an environment that encourages innovation, personal wellness and a commitment to excellence.

Objectives

  1. Supply our fellows with the educational resources, clinical experience, research opportunities, support, and mentorship required to excel within the multifaceted field of nephrology
  2. Enable our fellows to acquire comprehensive skills in evaluating, managing and performing procedural interventions related to nephrological disorders
  3. Motivate and prepare our fellows for future careers as leaders in clinical medicine, research and academic medicine within the nephrology domain
  4. Emphasize and teach our fellows strategies for maintaining wellness and personal effectiveness, allowing them to become role models of self-care and wellness while promoting the well-being of the patients they serve

Scholarly Projects

  • Nephrology physician dedicated to oversight
  • Fellows required to complete at least one research project
  • Fellows also expected to participate and complete one quality improvement (QI) project
  • Fellows expected to engage in medical education teaching.

Research

Our program also offers training in scholarly activities, including research and academic teaching. Nephrology fellows dedicate 19 months of their three-year training program to this area. Each fellow is expected to complete a scholarly project, which may be a clinical or basic science research endeavor. The fellows are responsible for designing and developing the study, conducting the appropriate research procedures, presenting the results at a national meeting, and writing a manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. A separate mentor, along with a scholarly oversight committee, will be available to guide the fellows throughout their scholarly pursuits. Additionally, the fellows are expected to participate in a quality improvement project within the division.
