First Year Curriculum
The fellow spends the one year of fellowship with the opportunity to follow patients in three different ICUs (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at Phoenix Children’s and takes call throughout fellowship with the division of Pediatric Surgery.
Surgical Critical Care
Fellows rotate with the pediatric surgeons and follow surgical patients in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Phoenix Children’s has a 48-bed PICU, a separate 48-bed CVICU and a Level IV NICU. Additionally, Phoenix Children’s sponsors a Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship and Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship.
Trauma
Fellows rotate with the Trauma service of the Pediatric Surgery division at Phoenix Children’s. While on this rotation, fellows should have more opportunities to work with the Pediatric Surgery fellows.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Anesthesia
Fellows spend two weeks rotating with Phoenix Children’s Neonatologists, who cover the NICU at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. While on this rotation, fellows have opportunities to care for micro-preemie patients. Fellows also spend two weeks rotating with the Anesthesiology service at Phoenix Children’s, concentrating on completing required procedures.
Burn Center at Valleywise Health
Fellows spend one month rotating in the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center at Valleywise Health. The Burn Center has 16 adult intensive care beds and 24 adult acute care beds and cares for more than 8,000 burn patients each year.
Surgical Intensive Care Unit
Fellows spend one month rotating in the twenty-bed multidisciplinary Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Mayo Clinic Arizona. In addition to medical and surgical critical care, the SICU treats cardiac, transplantation and neuroscience patients.
