Intern Positions
Our program offers two (2) positions in one track for Pediatric Psychology (APPIC code 205212) with an emphasis on consultation/liaison. The interns will receive training in assessment, outpatient medical clinics and outpatient therapy.
Training Period
The psychology doctoral internship begins the first week of July and ends the first week of July the following year.
Initial Screening
Our program reviews all complete applications. This includes assessing how well our program meets applicant needs and how applicant background and experience fit with our program.
By the first week of December, applicants will receive an email:
- requesting applicants to schedule an interview, or
- informing applicants that they are no longer under consideration
Eligibility
To qualify, applicants must come from APA-accredited programs. In addition, applicants should have:
- Completed at least four years of graduate school in psychology
- Three years post-bachelor, supervised clinical experience
- Two years post-bachelor supervised experience with children, adolescents and families
- Completed all doctoral coursework and all qualifying and comprehensive exams before the start internship
- Passed the proposal stage for doctoral dissertation
- Completed a minimum of 400 hours of supervised clinical experience, which includes practice in child, adolescent and family therapy
- Completed a minimum of 100 hours of psychological assessment and testing

The program may call applicant references for additional information during the recruitment season.
Final Decision Making
Each applicant's strengths and weaknesses will be considered to determine if the internship at Phoenix Children’s is a good fit. Applicants should consider whether Phoenix Children’s is a good fit for their training needs and professional direction. Applicants should consider talking with their advisor for guidance in the recruitment process.
Match Day
Our program is hopeful that everyone interviewed will be placed in the setting that meets their needs and expectations.
Our program will contact matched applicants by telephone after the noon (EST) deadline on Match Day, in accordance with APPIC Guidelines. Within 72 hours, our program will send matched applicants confirmation of their appointments.
Requirements If Matched
To promote a safe environment, all offers of employment at Phoenix Children’s requires:
- Successful completion of a standard background check - Criminal or other concerning history identified in a background check will be reviewed by the Training Committee, the Graduate Medical Education Committee and, if applicable, Phoenix Children's Compliance, on a case-by-case basis to determine if there are mitigating factors that warrant proceeding with the onboarding process. Phoenix Children's follows all applicable federal and state laws, including the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) in conducting any background screening.
- 12-panel drug screen - A positive result on a pre-employment drug and alcohol test that is not explained to Phoenix Children’s satisfaction will result in Phoenix Children’s withdrawing its conditional offer of employment.
- Immunizations - Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR), Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap), Varicella and COVID-19 are required. Formal exemption through Phoenix Children’s must be sought and obtained prior to engaging in any activities.For additional information about required vaccinations, please contact the Program Administrator.
- Tuberculosis screening prior to orientation.
- Mask fit testing
- Annual influenza vaccination or formal exemption approved by Phoenix Children’s.If trainee opts out of the annual influenza vaccination, protective gear (e.g., mask) must be worn during direct patient contact throughout the entire time period designated by Phoenix Children’s Infectious Disease.
The Phoenix Children's Psychology Doctoral Internship is a full-time commitment. Interns may not engage in outside professional activities without prior approval and may not provide clinical services to the public outside the internship. All requests are reviewed on an individual basis by the Training Director and Training Committee.
