Our Child Neurology Residency Program at Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s is a comprehensive, fully accredited, three-year program. It combines experiences at both Phoenix Children's (a major multispecialty children's hospital) and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (an internationally renowned hospital for neuroscience in the country). The two hospitals serve the city of Phoenix and the surrounding metropolitan area with a current population of approximately six million.
Our program is a three-year experience that follows two years of pediatric preliminary training. We are a categorical program and applicants only need to apply through NRMP/ERAS to our child neurology program. Four applicants are selected each year for this multi-disciplinary training program. With the combined excellence of neuroscience and pediatrics, Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children’s Hospital allows the trainee a variety of educational experiences.
The first year of training (PGY-3) emphasizes the evaluation and management of the patient with rotations in adult neurology, neuro-rehabilitation, and outpatient neurology experiences with patients who have a variety of neurological disorders.
The second year of training (PGY-4) complements the clinical experience of the first year by providing instruction and experience in pediatric neuroscience. The year consists of rotations through neuropathology, neurophysiology, and specialty clinics.
During the third year (PGY-5), the resident completes clinical training. The year consists of additional rotations in their areas of interest and specialty clinics. The PGY-5 resident assumes additional mentoring responsibilities to the PGY-3s and PGY-4s as well as rotators/medical students coming through our program.
All three years include experiences / exposure to Pain Management, Neuro-Immunology, Neuro-Oncology, Stroke / Neurovascular, Clinical and Movement Disorders, Neuromuscular Disorders, Cognitive Disorders Dementia, Clinical Neurophysiology / Epilepsy, Neuro-Rehabilitation, Neuropathology, Neuro-Oncology, Neuro-Otology, Neuro-Developmental Disorders, Neuro-Intensive Care Unit, Psychiatric Disorders and Sleep Disorders.
One of the many strengths of this program is the availability of a large, varied patient population. Our location in a multi-cultural area gives residents the opportunity to work with various ethnic groups including Native American and Hispanic populations. Our curriculum is broad-based, preparing pediatric neurologists for careers in both neurology and its subspecialties. Each year, many of our graduates enter prestigious fellowship programs, while others pursue careers in academic or general child neurology.

Our mission is to train child neurologists to become empathic future leaders, clinicians, and subspecialists, while training in a supportive and comprehensive environment.

We aim to do this via an educational curriculum that provides a wide range of patient complexity, breadth, and pathology across multiple ambulatory and hospital clinical settings. We also strive to do this with an understanding of the need for individualization of training to allow for specific career goals.
- We aim to prepare our residents to go on to practice general Child Neurology, or become academic Child Neurologists in major universities, or complete further fellowship training. We strive to offer mentorship and research opportunities to all residents to contribute to the rapidly evolving body of clinical and basic science child neurology research. Our residents have successfully been admitted to fellowships including pediatric epilepsy, pediatric headache, pediatric neuro immunology, pediatric movement disorder, pediatric traumatic brain injury, pediatric neuromuscular, and pediatric Neuro Critical Care.
- We aim to create the type of academic campus where both residents and attending physicians feel welcomed and supported. Many of our graduates have left for fellowship or private practice and then returned to become part of our permanent faculty. We strive to promote an awareness of the essential nature of physician self-care and resiliency, with an understanding of the need to promote long-term professional fulfillment and longevity.

The NRMP program number is 2952185C0 and is a categorical program, including two years of preliminary pediatrics training, for five years of residency training. You only need to apply to the Phoenix Children's Child Neurology Program as we work directly with our general pediatrics program to coordinate interviews.
We also have a reserved position for one PGY 3 slots. Our NRMP program number for the reserved position is 2952185R0.
We have not established a minimum score on the USMLE step 1 and step 2, but you will need to have scored above 200 to be competitive with other applicants.
