Arthrogryposis Clinic
In one comprehensive clinic visit, your child meets multiple specialists, including an orthopedic surgeon, plastic surgeon, geneticist, genetic counselor, neurologist, physical therapist and occupational therapist. You can count on our team for continued family-centered support after your appointment. This may include further tests, surgeries, therapies, casting and connecting you with family resources. Our wide-ranging programs and services include:
Arthrogryposis can often be diagnosed during pregnancy. Our Center for Fetal & Neonatal Care uses advanced fetal imaging studies like fetal ultrasound and MRI to identify signs of arthrogryposis and provide guidance before birth. This helps families understand what to expect and plan for care.
Arthrogryposis can occur sporadically or can be secondary to environmental or genetic causes. Anything that causes decreased fetal movement in the mother’s womb can result in arthrogryposis. It can also be linked to family history. If genetic causes are suspected, our Genetics & Metabolism team offers evaluation, diagnostic genetic testing and follow-up services.
Our surgeons perform serial stretch casting to help correct clubfeet and knee contractures over time. We also provide advanced limb reconstruction techniques to correct contractures at the hip, knees, ankles and feet to straighten limbs and improve function and quality of life. Our goal is to realign the limbs and position the joints in the most functional position, making movement easier and more natural for your child.
Our orthopedic surgeons perform surgeries on elbows, including joint capsulotomies, tendon lengthening and transfers, which replace a non-functioning tendon with a working tendon to restore strength, movement and function in your child’s arms. Humerus derotation osteotomy may be performed to position the arm in a more functional position and correct shoulder internal rotation contracture.
Neurological evaluation and testing identify specific conditions linked to arthrogryposis. Knowing the condition helps your family better understand your child’s diagnosis and what to expect as they grow.
The Bubba Watson and PING Golf Motion Analysis Laboratory can measure your child’s walking ability, movements and muscle activity, helping your care team identify treatments to enhance mobility and daily function. This facilitates treatment planning in some cases.
Our plastic surgeons perform hand, wrist and elbow surgeries, including osteotomies and tendon transfers, to improve grip, finger movement and overall hand, wrist and elbow function.
Physical and occupational therapists teach your child exercises and skills to strengthen muscles, increase independence and master devices such as a wheelchair or walker. Our physical medicine and rehabilitation team includes physical and occupational therapists who can help your child become stronger and more independent.
Customized splints or casts are very important in the care of children with arthrogryposis. They can gently position your child’s joints to stretch muscles, improve range of motion and alignment, and increase comfort during everyday activities. In some cases, splints are worn only at night. Our occupational therapists and orthotists work closely with your child’s medical team to create the right solution for your child.
