Arthrogryposis Clinic
We offer many programs and services to support children and families affected by arthrogryposism, including:
Arthrogryposis is present at birth and can often be diagnosed during pregnancy. The doctors at Phoenix Children’s Center for Fetal and Neonatal Care use a special type of imaging, called fetal ultrasound, to look for signs of arthrogryposis. The team also provides prenatal consultations for arthrogryposis to help families understand what to expect and to plan for care.
Arthrogryposis can occur for no known reason. It can also be linked to family history. If your child’s doctor suspects their arthrogryposis is genetic, they may recommend genetic testing. Our Genetics and Metabolism Department offers evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up services.
Sometimes surgery is the best option for children with arthrogryposis. Experts in our Limb Reconstruction and Lengthening Program offer the latest surgical treatments for arthrogryposis and other conditions affecting limb development and function.
Children with arthrogryposis may need help learning how to move, or with strengthening muscles and improving range of motion. They may also need help learning how to take care of themselves or learning to use assistive devices, such as a wheelchair or walker. Our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department includes experts in physical and occupational therapy who can help your child become stronger and more independent.
Your child may need an orthotic device, such as a splint or cast, to hold a joint in place, stretch joint tissues or align bones. Splints and casts for arthrogryposis can help your child move more easily. In some cases, splints are worn only at night. Our team of orthotists work closely with your child’s medical team to create the right solution that will improve your child’s range of motion.
