Arthrogryposis is a group of conditions that can cause a child’s joints to be stiff and difficult to move. At Phoenix Children’s, we offer one of the largest and most comprehensive arthrogryposis clinics in the region. Our exceptionally skilled physicians and specialists work to create personalized treatment plans. With early treatment, we can often improve or restore your child’s movement, making it easier for them to participate in daily activities.
During your visit, your child may see an orthopedic surgeon, plastic surgeon, geneticist, genetic counselor, neurologist, physical therapist and occupational therapist. These experts work together to create a personalized care plan with follow-up support to help relieve your child’s pain and improve their range of motion.
During this visit, we will perform a complete evaluation. We may also offer genetic testing to determine if your child has a genetic condition that may respond to other types of treatments. Genetic testing may also tell us if you have an increased chance of having another child with arthrogryposis. We’ll connect your family to resources and ongoing support.
Compassionate, Family-Centered Arthrogryposis Support
Arthrogryposis can be complex and affect your child’s physical, mental and social health. Families are also greatly impacted. At Phoenix Children’s, we’re dedicated to helping you and your child focus on what matters most.
We provide comprehensive and seamless care that addresses your child’s physical, mental and social health and wellbeing. We also partner with organizations in the community, including Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita Support Inc. (AMCSI) and Encircle Families, to help children and families navigate arthrogryposis. We can also help transition your child to adult care providers when the time comes.
What To Expect
Our clinic makes managing your child’s care easier by offering evaluations and care planning in a single appointment. Here’s what to expect before, during and after your Arthrogryposis Clinic appointment:
- Before your appointment: We will email you details about your appointment, including who you will see, where to go and health questionnaires to fill out and send back ahead of time.
- Arrival: A medical assistant will welcome you, take your child’s vital signs, and bring you and your child to an exam room.
- Clinic visit (approximately 3 hours): Our team of specialists will visit your room individually. It’s a great idea to bring extra bottles, diapers, snacks and toys to help your child stay comfortable and entertained.
- During the appointment: If an X-ray is needed, we will take care of this in the clinic.
- After your appointment: You will receive follow-up information and resources. Our team will meet afterward for a post-clinic conference to finalize the best care plan going forward. You will receive an email and phone call to discuss next steps and provide any information you may need. Detailed summaries from each provider will be available in your patient portal.
