Athletic Training Program
At Phoenix Children’s, we take athletes’ health and safety seriously. Our athletic training team is skilled at treating and managing concussions, heat illness, sprains, strains and a wide range of sports-related conditions, including:
- Asthma attacks: A flare-up of asthma, which is the narrowing or tightening of airways in the lungs, making breathing difficult
- Cardiac events, including sudden cardiac arrest: Any condition that affects the heart, including when the heart stops beating
- Concussions and brain injuries: A direct blow to the head that is often the result of impact with a ball or a person
- Diabetic emergencies: Occur when blood sugar levels become too high or too low
- Heat illness: Including heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke
- Sickle cell crisis: A complication of sickle cell disease, a blood disorder, which occurs when a blood vessel becomes blocked by abnormal red blood cells
- Spinal cord injuries: Often the result of a traumatic event that bruises, tears or otherwise injures the spinal cord
- Sports injuries (with referrals to Phoenix Children’s specialists as needed):
- Ankle problems: Including sprains, strains, stress fractures and injuries to the Achilles tendon
- Arm problems: Including UCL (ulnar collateral ligament) tears, fractures, tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- Back pain: Including sprains, strains and herniated discs
- Broken bones: Often due to falls or collisions
- Hip problems: Including hip labral tears, bursitis, hip pointers and sports hernias
- Knee problems: Including torn knee ligaments, meniscal tears and shin splints
- Neck pain: Including sprains, strains, whiplash and pinched nerves
- Shoulder problems: Including rotator cuff tears, dislocation and shoulder impingement
- Sprains and strains: Injuries to ligaments, muscles or tendons
