Athletic Training Program

Many of Phoenix Children’s athletic trainers were once young athletes themselves. We understand, firsthand, the drive youth athletes have to perform at their best, the disappointment of an injury and the determination it takes to return to play. Our programs and services provide opportunities for your child to condition and train to maximize their potential. We also offer immediate emergency care with physician oversight and expert management of injuries with personalized return-to-play guidance.

Athletic Training Coverage With Physician Oversight

Annual and per-diem athletic training coverage with physician oversight is available for many different schools, tournaments and events. Our athletic trainers provide coverage for all youth sports, including volleyball, soccer, flag football, gymnastics, ice skating, basketball, tennis and lacrosse. We offer:

  • Management of high school athletic training rooms
  • On-site athletic training coverage at multiple high schools, charter schools and private schools
  • Per-diem tournament athletic training coverage for small events and multi-day partner events
  • Creation of Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) if needed

The off-season is the perfect time for athletes to build strength, improve skills and prepare their bodies for the demands of the upcoming season. Our athletic trainers have specialized expertise in working with young and growing athletes during this time, helping them return to play ready and confident. We provide:

  • Pre-participation physical exams
  • Pre-season assessments
  • Pre-season conditioning
  • Sport-specific conditioning
  • Flexibility training

In addition to athletic training coverage with physician oversight, we offer:

  • In-season conditioning
  • Communication with coaches, parents and personal trainers regarding player status
  • Personal safety equipment evaluation

Injuries and Emergency Care Management

When an injury or emergency occurs, our athletic trainers serve as gatekeepers, activating the proper response. We provide:

  • Evaluation
  • Medical documentation
  • Coordination with physicians, surgeons, sports physical therapists and more
  • Taping and bracing for sports injuries
  • Therapeutic interventions
  • Rehabilitation services, including at-home exercise programs

Concussions

At Phoenix Children’s, we take concussions seriously. We offer baseline concussion testing and work closely with our Concussion Clinic to provide a personalized treatment plan and follow-up care. We implement strategies that support a safe return to sports and help young athletes manage long-term health. We’re also committed to giving teams, coaches and parents protocols and programs to help prevent concussions.

Heat Illness

As any parent and young athlete knows, the Arizona heat is a big concern when practicing and competing outdoors. Our athletic trainers are skilled at recognizing and treating the five categories of heat illness: heat fatigue, heat syncope, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. We also dedicate time to educating athletes, coaches and parents on the best ways to prevent heat illness, including heat acclimatization, hydration and the importance of early recognition and proper cooling techniques.

Education

One of the best ways we can help young athletes prevent injuries and perform at their best is by providing educational opportunities for everyone involved, including:

  • Injury prevention guidance
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Seminars, clinics, workshops
  • Community resources

We also offer an athletic training internship program at the graduate level.
