What is Orthognathic Surgery?
Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, is a procedure to correct differences in the position and growth of the upper jaw (maxilla), lower jaw (mandible) and chin. Conditions that cause these differences can make it difficult to chew, speak, breathe or achieve a healthy bite. They can also affect self-confidence.
We may recommend orthognathic surgery when braces or other orthodontic treatments alone cannot fully correct jaw alignment or bite.
What Can I Expect from Treatment?
First, you’ll meet your surgical team for a comprehensive evaluation and conversation about your treatment goals. Your surgical team works closely with your orthodontist and craniofacial team to start planning surgery early. Your child typically won’t have surgery until they are finished growing.
Using advanced 3D imaging, virtual surgical planning and custom surgical guides, we plan out your procedure. That way, we know exactly what to do during surgery, and you know what to expect. This process improves the accuracy, safety and outcomes of your surgery.
Depending on your treatment needs, you may receive:
- Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (lower jaw surgery)
- Facial skeletal augmentation and contouring procedures
- Genioplasty or genioglossus advancement (chin surgery)
- Le Fort I osteotomy (upper jaw surgery)
- Segmental jaw surgery
